Francisco Pizarro was a Spanish explorer and conquistador who conquered the Inca Empire in the 16th century. He was one of the most successful conquistadors in history and his victory had far-reaching consequences for the development of South America. Born in Trujillo, Spain, in 1471, Pizarro was the illegitimate son of a nobleman. He spent his early years as a pig farmer and soldier before embarking on his first expedition to the New World in 1502. After several years of exploring the Caribbean and Central America, Pizarro set sail for Peru in 1531. With a small force of men, he marched inland and captured the Inca capital of Cuzco in 1533. Pizarro was a ruthless and ambitious man, but he was also a skilled military leader. He defeated the Inca army and captured their emperor, Atahualpa. Pizarro was killed in 1541 by a group of rebel conquistadors. Despite his death, his conquest of Peru had a lasting impact on the history of the Americas.
